Over the course of two years, from November 2020 to November 2022, northern Ethiopia experienced a devastating conflict that caused immense suffering, hardship, and trauma among the civilian population.
During this time, there were unlawful killings, atrocities, and horrifying incidents of sexual- and gender-based violence. Millions of people were forced into displacement and destitution. Many sought refuge in neighboring Sudan, only to face further displacement when conflict erupted in that country in April 2023.
The humanitarian crisis in northern Ethiopia resulted in widespread food insecurity, collapsed health systems, and the destruction of vital infrastructure. By late 2022, it was estimated that over 13 million people required life-saving food assistance, with more than 5 million of them residing in the Tigray region (which constitutes 90% of the region’s population). Unfortunately, this region has been largely cut off from assistance and basic services throughout the conflict.
Given the critical humanitarian needs in northern Ethiopia following the conflict, the EU allocated €82.5 million in 2023 for humanitarian projects in the country. These projects aim to address the needs of the vulnerable population in northern Ethiopia and provide much-needed support.
