January 29, 2024 – Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that Apple’s forthcoming iOS 18 software update could be the most substantial in the company’s history. Expected to be unveiled at Apple’s annual WWDC event in June, Gurman notes that within Apple, the new operating system is regarded as possibly the most significant iOS update to date.

While specific details about iOS 18 are not provided in the recent report, Gurman had previously indicated that Apple aimed for iOS 18 to be its most ambitious and compelling update in years. The upcoming update might include a new version of Siri, making use of a new AI system. Improvements to Siri and the Messages app, with better sentence auto-completion and question handling, are anticipated. Additionally, Apple Music might introduce auto-generated playlists, a feature akin to Spotify’s offering.

Notably, Apple is reportedly exploring the integration of generative AI into development tools like Xcode, aiming to facilitate faster application development. Productivity apps such as Pages and Keynote may receive updates leveraging generative AI.

iOS 18 is also speculated to introduce RCS (Rich Communication Services) support. Apple had previously announced plans to add RCS support to iOS in 2024, aiming for better interoperability compared to traditional SMS or MMS. However, the report highlights that even with RCS adoption, messages from Android users to iPhones will still display in green bubbles.
