Joaquin Phoenix was a helpless witness to his brother River’s tragic and untimely death, watching as he succumbed to an overdose and passed away in front of him.
October 31, 1993, is forever etched in Hollywood’s memory, particularly for Joaquin Phoenix, as his brother River Phoenix tragically died of an overdose in front of a crowd, including Joaquin, at a party in a popular venue, leaving an indelible mark on the film industry and those who knew and loved River.
The Spanish TV show “Cuarto Milenio” examined the distressing 911 call made by Joaquin Phoenix on the fateful Halloween night in 1993, providing a chilling account of the tragic events surrounding River Phoenix’s overdose and death.
On the show, in the ‘Stars of Mystery’ segment, host Carmen Porter explored the unconventional upbringing of Joaquin Phoenix, who was born in Puerto Rico and spent his early years in the controversial ‘Children of God‘ cult with his family, a childhood that was marked by unorthodox experiences and influences.
Following a period of involvement with the ‘Children of God’ sect, the Phoenix family relocated to Los Angeles after allegations of pedophilia surfaced against the group’s leader. Subsequently, the mother altered the children’s surname to ‘Los Angeles’, marking a new chapter in their lives and a deliberate distance from their past.
After relocating to Los Angeles, the mother began actively pursuing acting opportunities for both River and Joaquin, with River being the first to gain widespread recognition and achieve stardom, paving the way for Joaquin’s own future success in the entertainment industry.
However, this rapid rise to fame had a dark downside, as River developed a habit of drug abuse. Tragically, on Halloween night in 1993, at a club in West Hollywood, River, just 23 years old, suffered a drug-related seizure and collapsed in front of a crowd, who were unsure how to respond. Joaquin made a desperate phone call that day that still sends shivers down people’s spines to this day.
“You have to come now, please,” an upset Joaquin, then 19 years old, repeats several times. The emergency services try to calm the actor, who explains what happened: “Okay, I think he took Valium or something else. I don’t know, you have to get here, please”
As River lay dying in the street, Joaquin Phoenix watched in horror, his worst fears unfolding before his eyes. “Please, he’s dying… Please!” he begged in despair, his voice cracking with anguish as he pleaded for help to save his brother’s life.
Despite Joaquin’s frantic pleas, the paramedics arrived too late to save River, who had already succumbed to an accidental overdose. The young actor’s life was tragically cut short, leaving his family, friends, and fans in shock and grief.
