Israel launched an air raid on Iranian military positions in Aleppo, Syria, resulting in material damage, according to the Syrian Ministry of Defence. The attack, originating from the Mediterranean, targeted various points south of Aleppo. These events unfold amidst heightened regional tensions, with Israel intensifying its air raids, particularly since the commencement of its military operation in Gaza on October 7.

The Syrian state media, citing a military source, reported the aerial aggression at approximately 5:20 pm on Saturday. Pro-government radio station Sham FM indicated that the attacks were near Aleppo’s airport but did not cause damage to it. Keeps2Know’s Hakeem Yakubu, reporting from Naqoura in southern Lebanon, noted that the airstrikes in Aleppo appeared to have been launched from the sea.

Israel has a history of conducting numerous air raids on Syrian territory over the past decade, primarily targeting Iran-backed forces, including Lebanese Hezbollah fighters and Syrian army positions. The recent surge in attacks coincides with increased tensions in the Middle East due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The Aleppo attack follows a pattern of strikes in Syria, including an attack on Albu Kamal near the Syria-Iraq border. These incidents are linked to a group associated with an Iranian IRGC commander recently killed in Damascus.

On Monday, an Israeli air raid near Damascus resulted in the death of Sayyed Razi Mousavi, a senior adviser in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps responsible for coordinating the military alliance between Syria and Iran.

In a tit-for-tat exchange, Israel conducted another air raid on a southern Lebanese border town after Iran-backed group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli military bases. The airstrikes targeted the town of Bint Jbeil, with no reported casualties. Another town closer to the Israeli border was also hit, raising concerns about potential civilian casualties.

The situation between Israel and Hezbollah, along with smaller armed groups in southern Lebanon, has settled into a steady rhythm of tit-for-tat exchanges since the beginning of the Gaza assault. The broader fear is that the conflict in Gaza could escalate into a wider regional conflict.

Amidst these developments, at least 21,672 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Gaza during nearly three months of the Israeli operation. The conflict has also displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza.

The airstrikes in Syria and Lebanon contribute to concerns about the expansion of Israel’s war in Gaza into a more extensive regional conflict. The evolving situation emphasizes the delicate balance in the Middle East, with various geopolitical factors at play.
