Prince Andrew Faces New Scrutiny Over Epstein Ties

For His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, the year 2024 has been marked by a series of unfavorable developments. The media has been ablaze with unflattering headlines, allegations of wrongdoing, and demands for him to relinquish his Windsor residence. These events have transpired within the past week alone.

In contrast, during the Christmas season, Prince Andrew appeared before the public following a church service at Sandringham. He was basking in the warmth of the Royal Family’s glow at that time. However, a few days later, he found himself in the glaring light of court documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. While much of the information contained in these unsealed documents was already known, it once again brought to light Prince Andrew’s association with Epstein’s circle.

Anna Whitelock, Professor of the History of the Modern Monarchy at City, University of London, remarked that “this underscores the fact that this hasn’t gone away despite the new reign and will continue to tarnish this generation of the royals.” Despite stepping down from his royal duties over four years ago, Prince Andrew appears to be further removed than ever from any prospect of rehabilitation and a return to public life.

This week, Prince Andrew faced a barrage of unfavorable front-page headlines and calls for his removal from royal life. Anti-monarchist group Republic reported him to the police regarding allegations in the Epstein files, but the Metropolitan Police stated that they would not be launching an investigation. The controversy surrounding Prince Andrew’s involvement with Jeffrey Epstein’s circle has persisted, despite his stepping down from royal duties over four years ago. Professor Anna Whitelock of City, University of London stated that “this hasn’t gone away despite the new reign and will continue to tarnish this generation of the royals.” The emergence of new information from court documents related to Epstein has shed light on the scale of Prince Andrew’s contacts with Epstein. Testimony from witnesses such as Johanna Sjoberg challenges Prince Andrew’s denial that he had any recollection of meeting Virginia Giuffre, who later sued and settled a civil sex assault claim against him.

The whereabouts of a famous photograph featuring Prince Andrew, Maxwell, and Giuffre in London remains unclear. Ghislaine Maxwell’s testimony also revealed that Prince Andrew had visited Epstein’s private Caribbean island. While there are no major new allegations in the court documents, expect more calls for Prince Andrew to be treated equally with others and not to be seen as above the law. However, it is worth remembering that being mentioned in the documents does not imply any wrongdoing, as names appear across hundreds of pages of testimonies, emails, and travel documents gathered for a defamation case brought by Giuffre against Maxwell in 2015. The case was settled in 2017 without any of the allegations being tested in court, and Prince Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Public opinion towards Prince Andrew has been unfavorable, with polling firm YouGov consistently showing him to be the least popular royal. In the most recent figures, only 8% of people in Britain have a favorable view of him. The lack of sympathy for Prince Andrew is also evident within royal circles, with sources suggesting that Prince William opposed his participation in public parts of the annual Order of the Garter procession. Additionally, royal insiders have expressed frustration that Prince Andrew has not shown any contrition or involvement in charities or good works, which might be seen as a way back. While Prince Andrew could argue that he remains innocent of any claims, the road back to public life seems steep, as the suggestion that he would condone, participate in, or encourage any such behavior is abhorrent, according to a previous statement by Buckingham Palace on behalf of the prince. However, as he is no longer a working royal, Buckingham Palace no longer comments on his behalf.
