John Cena’s Oscars Stunt

John Cena, renowned American professional wrestler and actor, made waves at the 96th Academy Awards ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood with a daring stunt. The 46-year-old created a memorable moment by appearing on stage completely naked, save for a strategically placed envelope covering his private parts, to present the award for best costume design.

Cena’s stunt was orchestrated by the event’s host, Jimmy Kimmel, who humorously referenced a historic Oscars moment involving a streaker from the 1974 broadcast. Despite Kimmel’s jest, Cena expressed discomfort with the idea, stating, “It is an elegant event, you know, you should feel shame right now for suggesting such a tasteless joke.”

However, Cena’s apparent nudity was not as it seemed. Behind the envelope, he sported what’s known in the industry as a “modesty garment.” These garments, widely used in film, TV, and theater productions, are designed to cover actors’ private parts when scenes require the appearance of nudity.

Jessica Steinrock, CEO of Intimacy Directors and Coordinators, an organization specializing in training professionals who work with actors on intimate scenes, explained the rise in specialized modesty garments. These garments, sourced from various materials including yoga mats and leftover fabrics, aim to provide actors with comfort and dignity during vulnerable moments on set.

Companies like Intimask, The Modesty Shop, and Covvier have emerged to meet the demand for specialized modesty garments. Covvier co-founder Lucy Shapiro detailed Cena’s garment as a spandex garment with a molded soft cup to ensure modesty. With an uptick in orders coinciding with the end of an actors’ strike, these companies are witnessing increased demand as productions resume.

Despite their small size and specialized nature, modesty garments can be costly, with prices ranging up to $62 for a “padded pouch” similar to the one worn by Cena. However, Steinrock remains optimistic that as the industry evolves, prices for these essential garments will become more accessible.

As Hollywood continues to prioritize the safety and dignity of performers during intimate scenes, the modesty garment industry plays a vital role in ensuring a respectful and comfortable working environment for actors.
