The iconic Staten Island mural of Big Ang has been covered up due to a dispute over unpaid bills. Despite this setback, her sister Janine Detore remains committed to finding a new location for a tribute to Ang, recognizing her impact on the community. The original mural was unveiled in 2016, featuring Ang’s larger-than-life image and a quote. Its removal has sparked controversy, with some attributing it to a publicity stunt. However, Janine asserts she owes $27,000 in back rent and is determined to find a new spot for the mural.
Janine Detore revealed to NEWS that the landlord of her store, Country Mouse Boutique, covered up the iconic mural of Big Ang after a dispute arose regarding outstanding payments. The mural, which had been a beloved tribute to Ang, was removed abruptly, leaving only a blank wall where it once stood.
Janine reported that the situation began to deteriorate in September when she underwent medical tests for various health concerns. The test results revealed that she suffers from severe allergies caused by mold exposure.
Janine stated that her doctors recommended inspecting her store for mold after diagnosing her with severe allergies. To follow their advice, she hired a professional to conduct a mold inspection at Country Mouse Boutique earlier in December to determine if any mold-related issues existed within the building.
Janine reported that she informed her landlord about the planned mold inspection and received a subsequent text message stating, “Just to let you know, this is coming down,” indicating that the landlord intended to remove the mural featuring Big Ang.
According to sources, tensions heightened over unpaid rent, totaling $27,000, which Janine acknowledges owing. The sudden decision to conceal Big Ang’s mural triggered strong emotions and left Janine’s granddaughter distraught, leading her to believe the act was an act of revenge.
Janine is determined to find a new location for the mural because she believes the city deserves another one due to Ang’s contributions to Staten Island. The landlord, on the other hand, claims that he attempted to repair a broken boiler at the store last month but was denied entry by Janine. He states that he offered to reimburse her if she fixed it herself, but she refused.
The landlord alleges that Janine is exploiting him by not paying her rent and suggests she is using the concealment of the mural as a publicity ploy to garner attention. He feels Janine is taking unfair advantage of him regarding the rent payments and is now trying to manipulate the situation with the mural for her benefit.
The landlord asserts that his decision to cover the mural was due to his intention of selling the building and not personal animosity towards Janine or Ang. He claims he took this action purely for business reasons.
