Vying for the Crown: A Comparison of the Prestigious Miss America and Miss USA Beauty Pageants
The Miss America and Miss USA pageants, renowned for their legacy in the world of beauty contests, have distinct differences despite sharing a common history. Initially, Miss America was established with the goal of empowering women and fostering their personal and professional growth, but it had a restrictive criteria that only allowed white, unmarried women who had never had an abortion to participate.
While the organization has updated its guidelines over time, certain eligibility requirements remain in place. In a significant change in 2018, Miss America dropped the swimsuit portion of the competition, signaling a deliberate move away from evaluating contestants primarily on their physical appearance and focusing more on their character, talent, and accomplishments.
While Miss America and Miss USA share some common ground, they have distinct differences in their origins and formats. Miss USA has its roots in Catalina Swimsuits, a former Miss America sponsor, which founded both Miss USA and Miss Universe in 1952. Although women can compete in both pageants, they are separate entities with different focuses.
Miss USA retains the swimsuit segment and its winner advances to Miss Universe, which takes a different approach, omitting the talent competition and emphasizing preliminary interviews, evening-gown and swimwear/athletic-wear presentations, and a final round featuring contestants’ responses to questions on social, cultural, and political issues. This divergence in format highlights the unique identities of each pageant.
The Miss America and Miss USA pageants were once connected through their shared ownership by Donald Trump and NBC Universal, but this association ended when Trump sold the Miss Universe organization, which includes Miss USA, to WME/IMG in 2015, following NBC Universal’s decision to terminate their contract.
While Miss America focuses on empowering women through personal development and educational opportunities, Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants prioritize international exposure, diverse competitions, and recognizing women who exemplify beauty, intelligence, and grace on a global scale, captivating audiences worldwide with their quest to crown exemplary queens.
