Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will embark on the Bharat Nyay Yatra from January 14. The yatra, which will cover 85 districts in 14 states, is expected to culminate on March 20.
Previously, the Congress leader had led the Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. This time, the yatra will commence from Imphal, the capital of Manipur, and conclude in Mumbai. On December 26, Congress general secretary in charge of the organisation, K.C. Venugopal, announced that the Bharat Nyay Yatra will traverse through the states of Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
On this occasion, the yatra will not be exclusively undertaken on foot as the Bharat Jodo Yatra was. Instead, it will involve bus travel with intermittent walking segments. Additional details will be communicated to the media at a later time. Jairam Ramesh, the Congress’s general secretary of communication, stated that the Bharat Nyay Yatra will prioritize the social, economic, and political justice of the country, akin to the focus of the Bharat Jodo Yatra on issues of economic disparities, polarization, and dictatorship. The party’s president, Mallikarjun Kharge, will inaugurate the yatra from Imphal. When asked about the selection of Manipur as the starting point for the East-West version of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress leaders explained that it was intended to address the grievances of the people of Manipur and underscore its significance as a part of the country. They also noted that Manipur has endured severe ethnic conflicts for months, resulting in the displacement of thousands and the loss of many lives.
Gandhi had previously visited the state during the time of the violence. The Congress party has transformed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s lack of visit to the state, either during or after the clashes, into a significant political concern. In response to whether other partners of the INDIA alliance would also participate in the Bharat Nyaya Yatra, the party leaders stated that the specifics are currently being finalized. During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, several leaders from other political parties had joined Gandhi for short stretches. When asked about the potential impact of the yatra on the upcoming Lok Sabha election campaign, Vengugopal mentioned that the election campaign and the yatra can proceed concurrently and urged the media to await further details.
